This section of the web site contains everything you need to know about the Allstar UK sponsored Youth Development Series.
The links here are also listed in the form of a "book" at the right hand side of the page to make it easier to navigate to different sections.
Please let us know if anything here is incorrect or you thinks we need to add anything else!
In early 2007 members of the Foundation Council identified a gap in the development pathway for young fencers aged 14-18.
At that time, fencers who completed the Allstar UK sponsored Scottish Fencing Youth Series competitions at 14 had two choices:
1 - Start entering adult open competitions in Scotland, or
2 - Travel to England and Wales to compete in the various youth competitions held there.
As a result (due to the challenge of stepping up to adult tournaments and the cost of following the wider UK series) it was identified that fencers often left the sport around the age of 14.
To counter this the Foundation decided to try to organise a new family of events in Scotland, and were delighted when Scottish Fencing agreed to endorse and Allstar UK kindly agreed to sponsor them.
It was hoped from the outset that these competitions would achieve the following aims:
The first year of operation (4 events) was very successful - thanks to the kind support of our sponsors, the schools and bodies who provided our venues and our volunteer referees and helpers.
After reviewing year one - and to dovetail in with a Scottish Fencing plan to provide training to u14 Fencers via the new TNG programme - the Foundation agreed to incorporate the Allstar UK Youth Series (for u10 to u14 fencers) into the YDS events.
This will allow:
A lot has been done already - but there is a lot more still to do and there are loads of opportunities to help out - if you are willing to lend a hand (NO experience is necessary - none of the council members are themselves fencers!) - let us know.
The Foundation For Scottish Fencing is a recognised Scottish Charity, established in 2004, whose aim is to promote and support the availability of fencing in Scotland to young people, irrespective of background, gender or ability.
Taking part in the Allstar UK Youth Development Series is not at all difficult - but you do need a few things!

All equipment must be in good condition, with no tears, loose parts, rust or damage.
In addition the fencers should wear comfortable sports footwear - fencing shoes can be purchased, but in the first instance squash shoes are a good alternative.
All of the above equipment can be bought from our sponsors Allstar UK who usually have an equipment stall at the main events. If you are looking for particular sizes we recommend that you call or email them first and ask them to bring those sizes with them on the day.
If you have any questions or need any help you can contact us here, or should refer to your club coach.
The 2007-8 Season of the Allstar UK sponsored Youth Development Series was our inaugural year - but it certainly packed in a lot of fencing for those who took part.
At the YDS round 3 event a couple of people commented on how intensive the day was - and that got us thinking - "Just how much fencing do we fit into a YDS day"?
Well, we've slaved over a hot slide rule (kids - ask your folks...) to work it all out.
The numbers are below and they are pretty staggering.
Remember that we usually start at 9:30 for foil and epee each day, and 1:30 for sabre (and in Round 3 it was an hour later for the morning start cos we're old and like to have a lie in now and again...).
We have never finished a comp later than 5:30pm - and we are normally off site by 6:15-6:30ish on the Sunday evening - often earlier.
In Round 1 we had a total of 92 fencers - over the two days they fenced 325 poule fights and 100 DE fights.
In Round 2 we had a total of 66 fencers - over the two days they fenced 246 poule fights and 72 DE fights.
In Round 3 we had a total of 67 fencers - over the two days they fenced 371 poule fights and 84 DE fights.
In Round 4 we had a total of 72 fencers - over the two days they fenced 272 poule fights and 72 DE fights.
So - in year one of the Allstar UK YDS - we had 297 competitive fencers, in 1225 poule bouts and 328 DE fights in about 60 hours of fencing!!!
We reckon that makes the YDS the most compressed day's of fencing comps there are... anywhere... period.
Got your entry in for Round 1 of the Allstar UK YDS 2008/9 yet?
From time to time fencers or their supporters leave an item behind, or accidentally pick up something that isn't theirs as they pack away at the end of the day.
We will place details of any items we have handed to us - or conversely anything that someone mislays - on this page.
Please use the link provided to contact us if you recognise one of your items, or can help us repatriate anything you may find in your fencing bag and think "now where did that come from????"
If you have lost or found any other item please let us know using the contact pages.

The Youth Development Series is just about to start its 3rd year and will again be a 5 round series for fencers aged 8-18. One once again we will be relying on some great work done by volunteers from the Foundation, coaches and parents and our ever helpful sponsors Allstar UK (who by the way are great - if you see them at one of this years YDS comps remember to tell them so!)
The five rounds this year will be:
Round 1 - 24/25 October - Edinburgh
Round 2 - 12/13 December - Glasgow
Round 3 - 30/31 January 2010 - Dundee
Round 4 - 13/14 March 2010 - Strathallan School
Round 5 - 24/25 April 2010 - Dollar (Gala Finals)
Use the links below for more details on each round:
The Allstar UK Youth Development Series has its own ranking system which runs across the 5 rounds of the competition - each fencer can count their best 4 results towards the final ranking list.
Please Note: Because there are no currently maintained and official Scottish Fencing (SF) rankings for u16's in any weapon, the Foundation try to maintain a parallel set of unofficial SF rankings to use for YDS NIF calculations and have used these calculations to finalise the NIF's for rounds 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Attached to this page are the 2009/10 YDS Final rankings.
You may also view these in a browser here.
Any queries or questions please contact us here.
Important Notes:
This ranking is in no way related to any Scottish Fencing (SF) Ranking list - only the official SF rankings are used to select squads and teams and any questions about selection processes should be referred to the relevant weapon co-ordinator as listed on the SF web-site.
For SF ranking calculation purposes the fencers who are placed 3rd and 4th respectively in a YDS competition will be treated as finishing 3rd equal (this reflects normal UK competition where all the places are not fenced off)
NEW 17/03: The NIF assigned to a fencer for Round 4 may differ significantly from that at Round 3 - this is due to the effect of the recent Scottish Schools Individual Championships. Fencers have moved up and down in the SF Unofficial rankings we maintain with a resulting change in their NIF value for YDS purposes.
Fencing points scheme are notoriously difficult to understand - and therefore the YDS ranking system is explained in the "YDS rankings explained" page here.

The third great year of the Allstar UK sponsored Youth Development Series will kick off with Round One to be held on 24th/25th October 2009 at St. Thomas of Aquin's RC High School - Edinburgh.
You can download an entry form and further information from this link
*** Please Note: For this round only, the Boys Sabre will be held on the Sunday morning and not in the normal established Saturday afternoon timeslot. This is a one off measure as a result of a diary clash to allow all fencers to also compete in the BSC Sabre event (an under 20 ranking competition) in Gateshead on 24th October.***
Full details of the event, requirements and venues will be posted shortly - however for those of you who are new to the YDS this year a single page briefing note can also be downloaded here.

We're back!!
The 3rd year of YDS got off to a great start thanks to lots of great support from our Edinburgh Fencing Club hosts, our fantastic sponsors and loads and loads of totally brilliant volunteer refs and officials.
Numbers were down a bit on last year, but it didn't really dampen the spirit or dilute the fencing talent with people travelling from Shetland in the north to Aldershot in the south and just about every point of the compass in between.
Monstrous thanks as ever are due to all of you - helpers, photographers, referees, chaperone buddies and of course the parents... Without your help we simply couldn't run the competition - 'nuff said...
Allstar UK - our series sponsors helped us make the YDS happen in the first place, and continue to make it possible for the fencers to enjoy this competition series through their unending support - thanks Bob & Paul and all your team!
Scottish Fencing - who make their equipment available to run the comps, - your ongoing support to the series is key to the YDS success, and we are very grateful.
On behalf of all the fencers who have benefitted thanks to your collective generosity and input - we'd like to thank you all.
You folks are making the changes we aim able to deliver to the young fencers of Scotland possible.

The perfect run up to Christmas...
Round 2 of the 3rd season at High School of Glasgow once again showed us once again why this is one of our favourite venues, thanks to our fantastic sponsors and loads of brilliant volunteer refs and officials.
Numbers are again a bit down a bit on last year, but if we thought that the last round drew people in from far flung places - (people travelled from Shetland in the north to Aldershot in the south for YDS Rd1) - we capped that this time with two fencers coming all the way from Singapore!!
We think thats a record that may last quite a while....
Massive thanks are due to all of you - helpers, photographers, referees, chaperone buddies and of course the parents... Without your help we simply couldn't run the competition...
We are however always looking for new helpers - the Foundation relies on our volutneers so don't be shy - we're a friendly bunch and if you really can't bear the tension of watching your kids on the piste we will always find you something to do ;)
Allstar UK - our series sponsors helped us make the YDS happen in the first place, and continue to make it possible for the fencers to enjoy this competition series through their unending support - thanks Bob & Paul and all your team!

New year, some New fencers but the same old welcome in Dundee...
Round 3 of the 3rd season at High School of Dundee showed us again why this is fast becoming our favourite venue, thanks to our fantastic sponsors and loads of brilliant volunteer refs and officials.

The Youth Development Series is going into its second year and we're trying to make it bigger (and hopefully a lot better) than year one once again relying on some great work done by volunteers from the Foundation, Scottish Fencing and our ever helpful sponsors Allstar UK (who by the way are great - if you see them at one of this years YDS comps remember to tell them so!)
The first year of the newly branded Allstar UK sponsored Youth Development Series took in four rounds - this year we are going not ONE - but TWO stages better..
We'll hold 5 rounds running from October 2008 through to April 2009
The five rounds this year will be:
Round 1 - St Thomas of Aquin's RC School - Edinburgh
Round 2 - High School of Glasgow - Glasgow
Round 3 - Dundee High School - Dundee
Round 4 - St. Modan's High School - Stirling
Round 5 - Dollar Academy - Dollar
Use the links below for more details on each round:
The Allstar UK Youth Development Series has its own ranking system which runs across the 5 rounds of the competition - each fencer can count their best 4 results towards the final ranking list.
Attached to this page is the final rankings - we will endeavour to have this updated with a couple of days of each round - the first one was a bit delayed whilst we decided how to do this years weighting to reflect the new structure of the series.
Any queries or questions please contact us here.
Important Notes:
View the FINAL (after Round 5) rankings online here -
(you can also download a Excel sheet copy of all rankings from the attachment link below)
Fencing points scheme are notoriously difficult to understand - and therefore the YDS ranking system is explained in the "YDS rankings explained" page below.

Creating a new ranking system is a complex task - so why did we decide to do so?
The Allstar UK Youth Development Series is not like any other competitions you are likely to enter. They exist to provide competitive experience in a condensed and high frequency environment (you will actually fence a lot more in a YDS competition than in any other competitive series with the same fencer numbers than any other series we know of - probably even anywhere in the world...)
We do this to give the biggest return for each event - the YDS is here to prepare fencers to enter the national level BYC, cadet, junior and Open competitions they will need to attend to develop their fencing into adulthood or if they wish to be selected for age related national representation (ie get selected for a Scotland squad...)
Because of this the YDS format differs massively from all other comeptitions out there - we typically have 2-3 rounds of poules, followed by DE rounds where all places are fenced off, or we use Repechage.
Having changed so much already to suit our goals, we therefore decided to create a ranking scheme that reflected the competitions and the fencers who take part in them.
The attached pdf document explains how we calculate the points for each round, agre group and weapon category.

In response to a suggestion at YDS 1 (good one Colin...) we have compiled a medal table of the respective clubs.
Its a fairly simple format - ranked by Gold, Silver and finally Bronze medals - and has been updated to reflect the final standings of the club medal positions after Round 5.
Congratulations to West Fife Fencing Club on winning the trophy this year!

Wow!!
What a way to kick off the new Allstar UK sponsored YDS series:
121 fencers - across 3 weapons - in 5 age groups,
506 Poule fights - 143 DE Fights - and all in 14 hours of fencing!!
Thats one fight, every 1 min 29 seconds, for 14 hours straight...!!!
Monstrous thanks as ever are due to all of our great volunteers - helpers, photographers, referees and chaperone buddies. Without your help we simply couldn't run the competition - 'nuff said...
Allstar UK - our series sponsors helped us make it all happen in the first place, and continue to make it possible for the fencers to enjoy the competition series - thanks Bob & Paul!
Our friends at Scottish Fencing - who make their equipment available to run the comps, and all the board members who turn out to help us on the day - your ongoing support for the young fencers is key to the YDS success, and we are very grateful.
And finally - many thanks are due to Edinburgh Fencing Club. This is the second year we have "borrowed" your venue to run a YDS and you couldn't make us more welcome - we really feel you work to "own" YDS Rd1.
In addition your own club initiative to fund your fencers through this round has really boosted the numbers and made the YDS Rd1 comp truly special.
On behalf of all the fencers who have benefitted thanks to your collective generosity and input - we'd like to thank you all.
You folks are making the changes we aim able to deliver to the young fencers of Scotland possible.
The updated series rankings are now available here.

Please be aware, that the Foundation Council have recently become aware of another fencing competition which has been organised on the same weekend as the Youth Development Series Round 2 (YDS 2) event on 22nd/23rd November.
That causes us some issues around securing the helpers we rely upon to run the comp - so we had to decide should we go ahead with our planned date despite this clash, or not?
After many messages of support from fencers, coaches and parents (for which we would like to thank you all) - and searching through the calendar for alternative dates which would not impact on anything else that would be important specifically to our target fencers - like qualifying comps, or training weekends (which was pretty tough), we have decided that the best course of action we can take for the YDS fencers is to go ahead with YDS Round 2 as planned.
We will continue to depend heavily on those people who are kind enough to come along and support us on the weekend and if you haven't already told us you can help out there is still loads of time - click here - all help is as ever most welcome.

We're just about halfway through the series now (well 40% - or 2/5ths for the older readers...), and of course we have to express our massive thanks to all who came along and made it such a great day of fencing again.
Round Two was an interesting one:-
But none of that mattered because:
We even had a snowman and a couple of santas on th esunday (see the pictures to prove it here).
Results are below - rankings will be up soon and we'll hopefully see you all again on February 13th & 14th in Dundee for Round Three.

We've now reached (and if we are being absolutely accurate) just passed the halfway point of YDS 2008/9 with 3 rounds down and 2 to go. Dundee proved to be something of a revelation for us - with loads of new fencers coming along and some fantastic help on the day.
As always we have to express our massive thanks to all who came along and made it such a great day of fencing again.
Round Three was somethng of an experimental event since there has been a long held view expressed to us that youth fencing competitions outside of the central belt are difficult to run, with low attendance from local fencers.
Clearly no-one told the Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness contingents however because we had loads of you there on the day and with our established YDS entries from Glasgow, Edinburgh and even Stockport (no that's not a typo!) it was another great event, with well over 100 fencers over the weekend (we're still adding up as we speak...)
So Dundee is already booked for next years round - after such a great welcome we decided we absolutely HAVE to go back again.
Other real highlights of the weekend were our new DT crew of Caroline Russel and Lorraine Brown - fantastic job ladies!
We even had time to hold our AGM - it did mean things went a bit slack for a half hour (sorry about that), but its done now and normal service will be resumed next month...
Results are below - rankings will be updated shortly and we'll hopefully see you all again on March 21st & 22nd in Stirling for Round Four.

We're now in the home straight of YDS 2008/9 with 4 rounds down and just the 1 to go.
Stirling proved to be a success again this year - with the change of venue working out really pretty well, loads of new fencers coming along and some fantastic help on the day.
As always we have to express our massive thanks to all who came along and made it such a great day of fencing again.
Round Four attracted loads of fencers from ALL over the place with Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh and even Stockport and the South East (truly national coverage!) it was another great event, with just about 100 fencers over the weekend.
Results are below - rankings will be updated shortly and we'll hopefully see you all again on April 18th & 19th in Dollar for Round Five.

Well the fat lady has sung and its all over for another year - (phew) - but what a great final we had in Dollar.
A few new faces combined with some well known ones gave us some great fencing over the weekend and a number of the series champions were decided in the final fight - and a lot of those went to 14-14...and even priority at 14-14!!
Results are below - final rankings will be updated shortly and we'll be putting up the champions for this year in a special gallery and pages just shortly.
For now many, many thanks to all who have made this year possible - we had a staggering number of fencing entries - 522 over the five events - and they had 1852 poule fights and 584 DE fights in about 90 hours of competitive fencing (no wonder we're a bit tired!!).
We'll be gathering our breath for a couple of days and then we'll be back looking to see what we can do to build fencing as a sport and planning for next years events.

The Youth Development Series was conceived in May of 2007 and - after some surprisingly intensive work by volunteers from the Foundation, Scottish Fencing and our ever helpful sponsors Allstar UK held its first event in December of the same year.
Organising a new event is not hard - but trying to shoehorn 4 linked events into an already packed calendar without impacting on anyone else was a challenge (to say the least).
The first season of the newly branded Allstar UK sponsored Youth Development Series took in four rounds:
Each round catered for u14 - o16 fencers in all three weapons - and Round One even attracted Scottish National Ranking points for selection to the Junior Home Internationals in Stoke.
The goal of the YDS is not to build something for those who already compete up and down the country however - and we were delighted to have over a dozen fencers join Sottish Fencing just to compete in the series.
You're the folks this series is intended for and we hope you keep coming back again and again...
Youth Development Series – sponsored by Allstar-Uhlmann UK - Rankings at end of the 2007/8 Series
The Top 75% of the finishers, (plus all medal winners if smaller), gain ranking points on the Development Series system, and the best 3 of the 4 tournament scores count for final places.
(Please Note: This is totally separate to the official Scottish Fencing rankings and is used only to determine the Series winners. In other rankings 3rd and 4th will be listed as 3rd equal as normal)
