About Us
Who are "The Foundation for Scottish Fencing"?
The Foundation is a charitable group - based and registered in Scotland as Charity No.SC036116.
We were formed in late 2003 under the name "Friends of Wallace Fencing" and have been working with fencing clubs and coaches since our inception.
In 2006 we identified that as a result of our name some people were confused as to the scope and nature of our activities, so in March 2007 we successfully petitioned OSCR to change our name to "The Foundation for Scottish Fencing" - or sometimes we're just called "The Foundation" by the fencers for short...
We work across all sectors of Scotland and are committed to supporting anyone regardless of background, gender or ability if we can.
What is your purpose?
Our objectives and goals are defined in our constitution as follows:
- To promote the art and skills of fencing for all people who profess an interest regardless of physical, sensory or learning disability or social background to improve their quality of life. Furthermore, this is provided to all, independent of aptitude.
- To initially develop and foster an interest in the sport and art of fencing in young people under the age of 21 years in order that they can enjoy the health and social benefits of self discipline, balance and fitness engendered by the sport. To further encourage the same health and social benefits, through the development of fencing sessions for adults.
- To assist the activities of all that join the Association in matters of teaching, coaching, and both non-competitive and competitive pursuits. All activities of the clubs under FOWF are open to all members of the general public.
- To encourage, arrange and promote local and national competition on a strictly amateur basis. These will be open and accessible to all, through the provision of affordable entrance fees and accessible locations. The overriding intent of assisting in the organising of these events will be to encourage increasing numbers of people to take part in fencing.
- To encourage and assist in the setting up of new clubs or groups which have the specific aim of promoting or adopting fencing to as many people as reasonably possible. Sufficient equipment and facilities will be provided to allow full participation by all.
- To associate with Scottish Fencing, Sport Scotland, British Fencing or such other organisation or body as may share the objectives of the Association to promote fencing for all in Scotland.
So from your name I guess you are part of Scottish Fencing?
Actually no - The Foundation for Scottish Fencing has no link with Scottish Fencing Ltd - the governing body for fencing in Scotland.
We do however work towards common goals and generally support each others objectives.
Who can join?
Absolutely anyone who shares the goals and wishes to work towards the development of fencing in Scotland can join the Foundation. (We have one consideration over child safety which can impact on membership - but have never had to call on that provision).
There is no charge to join - no minimum term of membership and no strings.
Who's who in the Foundation?
The Foundation is operated on a day to day basis by an elected council of 5 or more members. The AGM is held in the Autumn of each year and any member can stand for election.
Council members can hold a particular role for up to 3 years if annually re-elected.
Who are on the Council at present?
The current council members are:
| Owen Sayers | Chairperson | |
| Evelyn Duffus | Vice-chair | |
| Sharon Sayers | Secretary | |
| David Duffus | Treasurer | |
| Steve Euston | Sponsorship and Fundraising |
The council members are all non-fencers - just fencing parents - and have been involved in the Foundation since the very beginning so can answer any questions you may have - please feel free to email us using the links above.
