What do I need?

What do I need?

Taking part in the Allstar UK Youth Development Series is not at all difficult - but you do need a few things!

  • Scottish Fencing (or BFA equivalent) full membership for the relevant age category (the card must be brought to all competitions
    for check-in)
  • The right size of weapon (and of course the right type of weapon) for your category. All competition uses "electric" weapons - there are no "steam" weapon categories. All weapons sizes are maximums for the age group - ie where a size 5 weapon is listed, a fencer may choose to use a size 3. You will need a bodywire for your weapon (plus a head wire if you fight Sabre).

  • A fencing jacket - this must be either a 350N or 800N FIE quality
  • An underplastron (350N for u10,u12,u14 and 800N for u16,o16)
  • A protective fencing glove for your weapon hand
  • Long socks if wearing breeches (getting a hit on the bare leg is not much fun!)
  • A fencing mask 350N, or 1600 N FIE - the mask must have a retaining back strap
  • Fencing breeches (trousers) 350N or 800N are recommended for all fencers, but must be worn if you are using a Size 5 blade (see table above)

All equipment must be in good condition, with no tears, loose parts, rust or damage.

In addition the fencers should wear comfortable sports footwear - fencing shoes can be purchased, but in the first instance squash shoes are a good alternative.

All of the above equipment can be bought from our sponsors Allstar UK who usually have an equipment stall at the main events. If you are looking for particular sizes we recommend that you call or email them first and ask them to bring those sizes with them on the day.

If you have any questions or need any help you can contact us here, or should refer to your club coach.
